Directed by acclaimed filmmaker, Michael Mann, “Public Enemy” is an action packed thriller starring Jonny Depp and Christian Bale. The movie tells the true story of the legendary bank robber, John Dillinger (Jonny Depp). The charismatic bank robber of the depression-era, with his sharp quick hold, makes him the number one target of Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale).
Public Enemy opens like any crime other movie- the prison escape, with Dillinger just released after nine years inside, returning to his gang. But the entire scene matters less that the vivid scene in which masterful cinematographer Dante Spinotti has shot it.
No cops could ever restrain Dillinger. He could escape from anything; no prison for him was unbreakable. Dillinger’s charms have made him captivating to almost everyone, especially Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard), his new found love. Continuing his adventure with his gang, he soon becomes America’s first Public Enemy Number One and Purvis is sent to head up the squad to catch the bank robber in title. The entire movie makes Purvis and his squad look incompetent as Dillinger and his gang outwit Purvis at every stage with wild chases and shootouts. But the good guys have to eventually win and the chase has to come to an end, right?
I was actually filled with boredom as the movie targeted to its end. I expected a vibrant movie from Bale and Depp. The chase sequence got kind of repetitive and unending. Many scenarios were unbelievable. Like Dillinger manages to pick a woman randomly from any bar, who he has never met, yet convinces her to quit her job and go on the run with him. Johnny Depp’s work as Dillinger is remarkable, but Bales forced accent was quiet distracting and felt like he overplayed himself. The movie, an art film and a crime film may not give the audience anything emotional to hang on to, but the beauty and skills of the film making, keeps you tightly in its grasp. Mann’s attention to the minutest detail, his insistence that every detail be authentic, including the clothes and the historical locations, lend a sense of rightness to the entire movie watching experience.
